GREENS - Do you need them?

Let’s face it—most of us don’t eat as many fruits and vegetables as we should. Between busy schedules, processed convenience foods, and the lure of sugary treats, it’s no surprise the Western diet often falls short of providing the nutrients our bodies need. Enter greens powders: those mysterious green scoops you’ve seen health enthusiasts tossing into smoothies. Are they worth the hype? Let’s dive in.

The Problem with the Western Diet

The Western diet, rich in refined carbs, saturated fats, and processed foods, is notoriously low in essential nutrients. Studies show that many of us are deficient in key vitamins and minerals like magnesium, vitamin D, and potassium. On top of that, we’re not getting enough fiber or antioxidants—both of which play crucial roles in gut health, immunity, and reducing inflammation.

Fruits and veggies are the obvious solution, but how often do we actually meet the recommended five to nine servings a day? (Be honest!) Even when we try, modern farming practices can strip soil of its nutrients, meaning the produce we eat today isn’t as nutrient-dense as it was for past generations.

Why Greens Powders?

This is where greens powders come in. These supplements are typically made from dried and powdered fruits, vegetables, and other superfoods like spirulina, chlorella, and wheatgrass. The better versions include probiotics, digestive enzymes, and adaptogens for added benefits. They’re designed to bridge the gap between what we should be eating and what we actually eat.

Think of greens powders as a convenient nutritional safety net. Sure, they’re not a replacement for whole foods, but they can boost your intake of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants in a pinch.

What Can Greens Powders Do for You?

  1. Boost Energy Levels: If you’ve been feeling sluggish, the nutrient boost from greens powders might help. They’re packed with B vitamins and iron, which are essential for energy production.
  2. Support Digestion: Many greens powders include fiber, probiotics, and digestive enzymes to promote gut health. A happy gut means better digestion, improved nutrient absorption, and a stronger immune system.
  3. Reduce Inflammation: Ingredients like turmeric, spirulina, and kale are known for their anti-inflammatory properties, which can help combat the effects of a diet high in processed foods.
  4. Fill Nutritional Gaps: From vitamin K to magnesium, greens powders provide a spectrum of nutrients that might be missing from your diet. They’re especially useful if you’re vegan or vegetarian and need plant-based sources of iron and protein.

Things to Keep in Mind

Not all greens powders are created equal. Some are loaded with fillers or low-quality ingredients, so it’s worth doing your homework before buying. Look for one with organic ingredients, minimal additives, and a well-balanced combination of not only alkalizing ‘greens’ but also rich in antioxidants found in many fruit and berry powders/extracts. As a bonus if the greens can include adaptogens like reishi mushroom, ashwagandha or gingko biloba to help balance energy, hormones and mood.

If you have a sensitive stomach or more serious issues like IBS or SIBO, it’s especially important to check the ingredient list. Certain high-FODMAP ingredients—like inulin, garlic, onion powder or cruciferous vegetables —can trigger symptoms like bloating and discomfort. Low FODMAP greens powders are specifically designed to avoid these problematic ingredients, making them gentler on sensitive stomachs. They allow you to get the nutrient boost without aggravating digestive issues. Look for blends that focus on low-FODMAP greens like spinach, kale, and spirulina, as well as digestive-friendly superfoods.

Is It Worth It?

If you’re someone who struggles to eat enough fruits and veggies, greens powders can be a game-changer. They’re quick, easy, and packed with nutrients that can help offset the deficiencies common in the Western diet. For me, they’ve become a simple way to feel like I’m taking care of my body—even on the busiest days.

At the end of the day, the goal isn’t perfection. It’s progress. And if a scoop of greens powder helps you get there, why not give it a try?
